Arrowpoint with the Bacons

Here I am with my sister, Carolyn. She and her husband have visited the area where we are serving our mission in New Amsterdam and now we are going on a little adventure into the jungle.

We have just begun our trip to Arrowhead and have stopped off on the way for a short visit to a little Amerindian village, Santa Mission. You'll see a few more photos of Santa Mission later.

Arrowhead is a favorite spot where the senior missionaries in Guyana love to go for a little 2 day getaway. It is a small resort run by the Amerindians and is about 2 hours from Georgetown. It is tucked away in a quiet secluded spot in the jungle. Nothing is around it, except a village of 250 Amerindians. Some of them run the resort. There are a lot of beautiful birds and butterflies in the jungle. And yes, there are also a variety of jungle critters...and snakes!

I have been so anxious to take a member of my family to Arrowhead. When Carolyn and Carl (my sister and her hubby) said they wanted to visit us in Guyana, I could hardly wait to share with them the adventure of Arrowhead.

The trip to Arrowhead from Georgetown includes an hour-long speedboat ride crossing the huge Demerara River (pictured) and snaking up the smaller river back into the thick jungle.

We were just leaving the dock in this next photo and some of the other senior couples were in the boat with us.

I have never arrived at Arrowhead wearing dry clothes! Somehow I always get splashed.

This huge tree is at the entrance of the Amerindian village, Santa Mission. Carl and Carolyn are like dwarfs in comparison to it. I'll show you a few photos of us walking through the small village.

We shopped a bit in this Amerindian craft shop and I purchased these skirts for my 6 littlest granddaughters. I hope I find a way to get them to them!

We wandered through the school, though it was in session. No one seemed to mind our disturbance.

Boys, boys, boys...where are all the girls?

Carolyn wasn't too happy about what had happened to her beauty parlor hairdo about the time this photo was taken.

I found these little girls sitting in the tall grass and just had to join them for a photo.

And Carl had to have one, too...with even more little girls! Why are some of them hiding?

Every time I've been to this little village, I've met this tiny granny at the top of her stairs and had a photo with her. She had 9 children and her husband died of an accident so she had to raise them without him.

The rest of the photos will be of Arrowpoint. These were our cooks and they made amazing meals.

Here's a sample of one of them. I especially loved the pumpkin they served at one of the meals that they cooked with onions, celery, shallots and garlic. Ummmm....yum!

We went on a kayak ride through the jungle. Carolyn was petrified that a snake was going to drop from one of the trees. I love kayaking through the jungle. Check out the reflections of the trees in the black water.

We finished our kayak ride...and saw no snakes!

Carolyn is smiling now but I'm not sure she smiled while she kayaked. Carl and Carolyn were rowing their kayak so fast we couldn't keep up with them!

We took an 8 mile hike through the jungle to where there are the remains of a crashed airplane. As we walked along, we were delighted by large, bright blue butterflies dancing down the path in front of us. It rained our entire hike so we were soaked to the skin. But, it was fun!

This cabin is a duplex cabin. We each stayed in a side. We could see bats perched inside the tall roof. Carolyn and I were both dressed in our bathing suits and ready to...

... swim in the rootbeer colored water. It was fun, fun, fun! And we swam for hours.

At night they served us a special dinner outside by this fancy fire.

And here's how the fire looked at its peak!

A good time was had by all...especially by the Bullocks and the Bacons...and it was definitely an adventure not soon to be forgotten!
